Ultrasound
What is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. It's like using sound echoes to see what's happening inside you.
A small device called a transducer sends out high-frequency sound waves into the body. When these sound waves encounter different tissues and structures inside, they bounce back as echoes. The ultrasound machine then translates these echoes into images that doctors can use to see organs, blood vessels, or developing babies in the womb.
Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive, and doesn't involve radiation, hence it is used for various purposes, such as checking the health of a baby during pregnancy, examining organs like the heart or liver, or guiding medical procedures.
Is there any preparation for an ultrasound and what can I expect during my ultrasound appointment?
There is usually no preparation for an ultrasound. Our reception staff will let you know of any instructions at the time you make your appointment. Please bring any previous imaging and reports you may have.
An ultrasound exam is a very easy procedure. A sonographer will place a small amount of ultrasound gel on your skin. They then produce the images by touching your skin with an ultrasound transducer. There is no pain or discomfort for this test. The sonographer may get you to move the area that is being scanned to watch the anatomy move on the screen. The images are reviewed by our Radiologists who may visit you in the treatment room whilst you are having your ultrasound. A musculoskeletal ultrasound takes no longer than 30 minutes and we aim to report your results on the same day, sharing them with your referring doctor.
For an interventional procedure under ultrasound guidance, you will first meet our nurse or sonographer who will explain the procedure to you.. The injection will be performed by our radiologist. Using an ultrasound machine, the radiologist can guide a small needle to the point of injection. The ultrasound allows for accurate localisation of the needle and to avoid important structures like blood vessels. Most patients report immediate relief after their injection. Our nursing and sonographer teams will ensure you are fully recovered after your procedure prior to heading home.
What do you need to bring to your appointment?

Will my results be sent to my doctor and how long will it take for them to receive it?
Your examination will be interpreted by our radiologists and the results will be sent as soon as they are ready, to your referring doctor. Your results will then be explained to you by your doctor.
